LOVE.check for southern Africa
In January more than 25 organizations, including
those based in: South Africa, Zambia, Kenya, Swaziland, Lesotho
and Botswana, have received a new edition of the game LOVE.check.
This game was developed in 2004 and after it had been used
and critically tested at dozens of locations, its content
was readjusted. LOVE.check is suitable for the countries of
southern Africa. It has been printed in an edition of 31.000
copies. Because most of the games will be distributed in Southern
Africa, we have decided to publish the instruction leaflet
in the following languages: Zulu, South African, English and
Tswana. The games will be distributed by several organizations
including: Lovelife, The Darling Trust of cabaret performer
Pieter Dirk Uys, Biblionef, Girl Guides Association, Childline
South Africa, SACBC AIDS Office, Ndlovu Aids Office.
In June 2004 the photographer Adriaan Backer and Karin van Paassen stayed at Sizanani in Bronkhorstspruit. They were there to photograph the game LOVE.check for Southern Africa. In the neighboring township Ekangala, pictures were made with the cooperation of inhabitants of Ekangala and the drama group Teleios Korban Organization under the direction of Martin Duruji. They performed like real actors in front of the camera. The group consists largely of orphans. Ekangala and the surrounding townships have been badly hit by AIDS.
That is why many children are orphans who live with their grandparents or with other members of the family. However, the community is no longer able to take care of everyone. Consequently, some of the children end up on the street nowadays. If children and young people can join a drama group, they have a purpose in life again. The group scores high with performances at national and international festivals and in films.
The development of the game LOVE.check/ Southern Africa has been effected thanks to a front desk-subsidy from ICCO.
In 2005 and 2006, many activities were carried out to collect money for the large edition and for the distribution of the games. A great deal of the money has been donated by the Foundation de Wollebrandcross. Gallery Intermezzo existed 21 years and organized a design auction, a bride and bridegroom asked money for LOVE.check instead of wedding presents. Rotary Rotterdam Nieuwe Dag cooperates with Rotary Silverton Pretoria and the financial profit was doubled by Cordaid. But there are also gifts from the Condomerie and from individuals.
